“It is a medicine to sing and dance and be together doing what we love along with representing our own Songhees Nation. Our culture is a gift, a blessing.” – Lyla Dick
Started by Lyla Dick and Beth Dick’s late uncle, Ray Peters along with Bob Malcolm at the Victoria Native Friendship Centre back in 1978, Skip Dick, Butch Dick, and Jim Dick and their children were part of the original group. Songs like the Prayer, the Girls’ Honour Song, Remembrance, and Finale all came from “Uncle Ray.” The Paddle Welcome Song was gifted from Elder Flora Joseph to the group.
The Lekwungen Traditional Dancers have performed at schools, festivals, parades, tourism events, private functions, events for all levels of government, and for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
